I, Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States, guided my country through the most devastating event in the history of the United States. During the Civil War, I assisted the Union in eliminating slavery in the South and in preserving the Union. I am debatably one of the greatest Presidents to ever lead this country. I was born February 12, 1809, near Hodgenville, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Hanks. I had two siblings, Sarah and Thomas; however, both died prematurely. In 1816, I moved to Pigeon Creek, Indiana. Soon afterwards, my mother died of “milk sickness.” My father remarried in 1819 to Sarah Bush Johnston; she already had three children of her own. As a child, I had very little formal education. I taught myself to read, to write, and to do arithmetic. I enjoyed reading books on my spare time. In 1828, I acquired a job as a deckhand and rode a flatboat to New Orleans. We moved out of Indiana and settled in Macon County, Illinois. During 1831, I was hired as a clerk in New Salem. I was tall and unappealing during my adult years.
