Form:
The form of the classical period revolved around four movements.
-1st movement was the fast movement
-2nd movement was always slow
-3rd movement was a dance related movement and
-4th movement returned to a fast movement.
Most symphonies followed this 4 movement pattern. Classical movements often have very different, contrasting themes. In these movements there can be up to four or more different themes. This trait is typically classical- with the composer using small pauses or breaks prior to introducing a new theme.
Larger sections of classical music balance themselves wether it's a wondering theme is followed by a stable theme to reassert itself in the movement. It is very rare for a classical piece to finish unresolved, because of the balance created throughout the piece.
Orchestra:
Consisted of 4 sections: strings- 1st violins,2nd violins, violas, cellos, double bass
Woodwind- 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons
Brass-2 French horns, 2 trumpets
Percussion- 2 timpani
Woodwind works in two with each instrument being paired along with the clarinets which are a new introduction in to the Classical orchestra, making it an overall bigger orchestra. In public performances, there could be up to 60 musicians...
