Youth workers are a bit like social workers and welfare workers but they work and help people under the age of 25, they either work with them individually or in groups. Youth workers help young people to deal with social, emotional or financial problems, they help them by planning and organizing activities or programs.
Youth workers work in places like schools, hospitals, corrective institutions, youth refuge and community centers YMCA and other organizations.
Tasks and duties include:
Establishing and maintaining working relationships with young people and their families, peers and communities
Providing support, information and resources to young people
Providing a link between young people and social services, and arrange referrals to the appropriate services
Planing, delivering and evaluating programmes for young people
Training and managing volunteers
Managing budgets
Writing reports and preparing applications for funding
There is no specific age where you are able to work, but its possible to start training while still at school
There is no specific level of secondary schooling but training requires year 10 with a pass in English.
The main subject you should do towards it in VCE is English, but to improve your chance of getting the job you should also do Economics, Home economics and industrial arts.
Since there is no specific educational requirement to becoming a youth worker, so courses vary from institution to institution, but training is available at the certificate, diploma and degree levels, which require the completion of VCE and a pass in English.
To improve your chances you will need to have qualified in the "NTIS qualifications for youth workers"
A New Apprenticeship is also possible but employers require applicants with a year 10.
