Self-Reflection in Sean O'Faolain's "How to Write a Short Story"
In this short story we could read about a man who was an adult, mature person with a humble and peaceful personality. He has closed and digested his past with all its difficulties, humiliations, embarrassments and pains. These experiences have influenced his life, he used to mull over the happenings of his childhood but in his conversation with the writer it became obvious that he had left all these far behind. It was also plain to see that Frank has not talked about his memories to many people yet. Earlier it might have been the shame that he has felt or the confusion that did not allow him to consider and look upon his own life's events from a healthy distance. After being over the worst he was able to reflect on himself and to see himself as a calm and satisfied man being free from any self-reproach or opinion of others.
He sees his own characteristic features from a neutral point of view without any shame because of his failures or any false modesty because of his virtue and qualities. He knows that he used to be a beautiful boy so that he does not block any praise or any appreciative words. He himself says that "It so happened that I was a ridiculously beautiful child." (p...
