Jake and Brett’s final dialogue at the end of Ch. 19 in Robert Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises:
“Oh Jake,” Brett said, “we could have had such a dammed good time together. ... The car slowed suddenly pressing Brett against me. ... ”
Jake and Brett’s Disillusionment
This short passage from the end of The Sun Also Rises is the final and ultimate
result of Jake and Brett’s relationship. ... They believe that they could have had a wonderful romance, if they could only have sex, but a careful analysis of this passage and its context will prove Jake and Brett’s perception of their relationship to be inaccurate. ... Jake and Brett both fought feelings of desire for each other throughout the story, and this conversation is their final expression of their frustration and discouragement. The two imply that they love each other several times in the novel, but Jake never allows their love to blossom. By saying “we could have had such a dammed good time together,” Brett is pointing out that fulfilling their desires for each other would have been “wonderful.
