Theme of Isolation in Frankenstein
Isolation is a feeling of separation. A person or thing feels removed from the rest of a group. Isolation is a universal emotion that most individuals feel at some point in their lives. Some individuals choose a life of solitude, as they dislike the chaos of the world and the judgmental eye of other people. However, some people are involuntarily isolated from the group due to their appearance or actions. Society shuns these people, as it is not comfortable with people who are unconventional or simply "different." These two types of isolation are both seen in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. From the beginning, Victor Frankenstein chooses a life of isolation while the creature he creates suffers unwanted isolation. The conditions of their isolation, desired and undesired, spur very different responses from these two characters.
