John Smith and William Bradford were both very important figures in colonizing the New World. They proved to be successful in an environment where few proved to be. Both men took charge of their own colony and led it to be prosperous (compared to its beginnings). And as you will learn, these men had their differences as well as their similarities in their actions and thinking.
John Smith was an adventurous and entertaining admiral for New England. In his writings he drew a sort of contrast between himself and the colonists. He portrayed himself as able and experienced but he noted that he shared the colonists' hardships as well. William Bradford had a great sense of fellowship, which is evident in his writings. He seemed compassionate for his fellow Puritans' poor health. At times though, he seemed heartless, such as when a boastful young man died before everyone else...
