A. David Chu founded Nautica in 1983. He designed a collection of men’s outwear with new technologies of fibers and fabrics. He chose the name Nautica to identify a lifestyle of energy, activities and fitness; but first started the organization using the Latin word “ships” as the name of the organization. In 1984, Nautica was acquired by State – o- Maine, Inc an apparel company that changed its name to Nautica Enterprises, Inc in July of 1993. The first stores to have Nautica’s designs were Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, and Macys. Men’s sportswear is his signature component of his collection that the foundation has expanded to men’s tailoring, furnishings, rainwear, hats, watches, and sunglass collection. In 1997 Nautica introduced Women’s swimwear. Today it’s considered one of the top three selling brands. In August of 2003, the five billon VF Corporation also known as (Vanity Fair Corporation) one of the largest apparel company merged with Nautica Enterprises as part of the worldwide consolidation in the branded apparel industry. They have currently relocated their office to New York City at 40 West 57th Street. The store showcases a diverse group of Nautica apparel and licensed products in an environment especially designed for this landmark location. Nautica also has more than 100 retail stores internationally. B. Nautica ranges from Men to Women, children, Jeans, accessories, home furnishings, and fragrance. In men clothing it has three sub categories: sportswear, sleepwear/underwear, and tailored. The Women’s product is sleepwear and swimsuits, and children’s is sportswear. For men’s jeans there are Cabin Jacket and Western Metro Jean. For women there is non- stretch Dimensional Denim Jeans. The jeans targeted to a young cool customer.
