The novel, A Farewell to Arms, contains many different symbols associated with the character's feelings expressed by events throughout the story. Rain symbolizes fear and death. When a storm begins, one evening, Ms. Catherine Barkley explains her fear of rain, and how she sees images of death in the water. While Fredrick Henry is away at war, the Austrians attack, and several soldiers are wounded as a storm begins. Lastly, when Ms. Catherine Barkley suffers in the end from a hemorrhage and dies, Henry walks away in the rain. In the book, the rain symbolizes the sorrow and fear of death.
