Radiohead's 2001 release "Amnesiac" is an unusual musical statement packed with themes expected of the eccentric Thom Yorke. Transformation and the search for identity is a major theme that has carried throughout Radiohead's career. The hatred of authority and corruption also penetrates this album just as it did the band's previous work. Panic and seclusion are also ever present Radiohead themes. A new theme to emerge on the "Amnesiac" album is a fear of the future and a nostalgic view of the past. These themes are created through many different techniques and emotions making this album an awkward, yet innovative and powerful artistic statement.
The opening track, "Packt like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box," details Thom's search for identity and his disappointment at years of searching with no result. "After years of waiting nothing came," he says, showing that through all of his success and experience he has yet to find himself. The title describes the emptiness Thom feels from living as simply another face in a faceless world. The semi-monotone and repetitive vocal line parallels the feeling of conformity and searching, adding to the overall effect of the track...
