All Quiet on the Western Front Differences and Similarities
All Quiet on the Western Front is a very well written book and a well directed movie. Even though both the movie and book follow roughly the same plot there are differences in the style. They are not entirely different though and similarities are present. This paper will address the similarities and differences in style in the scene where Kemmerich dies is analyzed. The tone and the mood in the movie and the book are similar but the character portrayal of Paul is different.
Tone is defined as the attitude the author wants to convey. Both the director and writer want you to feel sympathy for Kemmerich when he dies. The figurative language used when Paul describes Kemmerich makes a strong impression that he is slowly dying, "His lips have fallen away, his mouth has become larger, his teeth stick out and look as though they were made of chalk. The flesh melts the forehead bulges more prominently The skeleton is working itself through. In a couple of hours it will be over...
