The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock sounds like you are about to hear a poem about happiness and romance. This is the very first sign of irony without even reading the poem. The title is very deceiving, for it does not have anything about romance or anyone being happy in it. This poem was written in the age of naturalism. Naturalism was all about chance and fate. Naturalist would ask how much free will do we really have or control. Love song, more than one time would ask “Do I dare disturb the universe?” This one line proves the poem is naturalistic. I had a very hard time understanding this poem, but the reason for this is because it is so choppy and fragmentary. It goes from one thing to another like patient etherized upon a table, crab scuttering across the floors of the silent sea, Hamlet, Michelangelo, cats, mermaids, maze (city streets), perfume, yellow fog, and becoming bald to list a few.
