Throughout WWII, there were many horrific events that were sparked by the political activist groups in Europe. Among those groups was the Socialist party of Germany. The election of Adolph Hitler as chancellor in Germany led to the creation of the NSDAP, or the Nazi party. The Nazi party (originally called the German Worker's Party) was the anti-German government (German culture). And with anti-German government, you would need an anti-German army to protect the anti-German government. The purpose of the Schutzstaffel (SS) and the 1st Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler" was to act as a prime fighting force for Nazi Germany, as well as a body guard towards Hitler.
With Hitler being a full-time Nazi party leader, there was no time to worry about protecting himself, hence the creation of the SS. Of course, he would need a very loyal person to protect him, so there was a very tedious selection process. In 1929, Heinrich Himmler was appointed head chief of the SS (Hoyt, 22). Heinrich, preciously an unsuccessful chicken farmer, would take his 200 men starting, and turn it into a whole new division numbering over thousands of men (Heinrich)...
