Health promotion within Australia, and specifically within the workplace, is an ongoing issue within society. While many workplaces implement health education techniques, the implementation of health promotion techniques create a working environment that is more pleasurable to work in, and more efficient in productivity. "Health Promotion in the workplace refers to those educational, organisational or economic activities in the workplace that are designed to improve the health of workers and therefore the community at large" (World Health Organisation, National Definition, 1996, p. 17). The World Health Organisation (WHO), have developed many clear ideas as to what health promotion is, and how to implement health promotion techniques within the workplace. Certain specific issues will be discussed in relation to these ideas, including drug and alcohol use and it's effect on the workplace, smoking as a risk, fitness and obesity and also workplace hazards, and in particular, ergonomic hazards. The WHO has also provided clear guidelines and a frame of action for health promoting in the workplace, which will be discussed in detail. The relevance of these issues is not specifically for Australia, but is most definitely issues that are prevalent within modern society and the workplace.
Within the workplace, drug and alcohol problems can be seen as a threat, not only to the affected individual but to colleagues as well. The WHO (1993), states that "Managers have been convinced of the need for intervention by their awareness that absenteeism, occupational morbidity, inefficiency on the job and safety hazards are often due to alcohol and drug use"...
