The “American Dream” is a goal with many broad aspects. There are many definitions to the American dream, but it all rounds about in the same manner. The American dream consists of a wonderful job where you are successful and have many contacts, a loving and supporting husband or wife who waits at home for you, and wonderful kinds who are all star athletes and make top-notch grades. Life is a long road of unsuspecting twists and turns. It is always good to have a dream, but where do we draw the line between dreams and reality. There are many people in the world obsessed with being perfect and try all their lives to live the American dream. The obsession then gets out of control and they start to live for false hopes and dreams. The play Death of a Salesman illustrates how out of control a persons life can get when they lose focus of reality. This play expresses that life is not a contest to be won by using popularity, but a game of survival that has to be played by key or else you end up with regrets and misery. Once a person grasps the idea of a “perfect life” its hard for them to let the idea go. They begin to become compulsive and irrational. They don’t lend an ear to the things that they don’t want to hear, and believe the way of life they live is the only and correct way to live life. These people strongly believe that looks and pure popularity is the key to success in the game of life. The character Willy Loman believed that being well liked was they only way to get anywhere in life: Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead.
