Archeological excavations proved that the area of Khmelnitskiy city was inhabited in ancient times, about 300,000 years ago. Khmelnitskiy area is located in the south-west of the East European plain in the forest-steppe and mixed forest zones of Polissya (Woodland). This city was first mentioned in the history and its first name was Proskuriv which was kept till the year of 1954 when it was renamed after the Ukrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnitskiy, from that time it's known as "Khmelnitskiy".
The Khmelnitskiy city is not one of the biggest cities in Ukraine, its area about 126sq. km and the population only 217,000. And even when its area is so small, butt from the end of the 18th century it became a part of Russia, and from that time Khmelnitskiy was an administrative center and center of trade, especially bread wholesale business. Khmelnitskiy played a big role in Ukraine; it provided the country with many goods. Some people think that the history of Kiev is the most unique, because it is a capital of Ukraine, but Khmelnitskiy city has the most unique history of all the other cities in Ukraine because of its water supply, crops and mineral resources.
In Khmelnitskiy and its region over 3,000 rivers and streams flowing across the area. The region has 60 reservoirs where the water supply comes up to 153 million cubic metes, and it also has 1799 ponds...
