With increasing usage and popularity of the Internet, it is no surprise that many people find the need to stake their own claim to a part of it by creating personal websites. However, a large number of these people have no experience in website design, and turn to the Internet's many resources to learn how to build one. Unfortunately, a novice in web design, like any other field, enjoys flaunting his or her new knowledge, with predictable results.
The stereotypical novice website involves blinding combinations of background and text colours, animated GIFs in every imaginable place, inconsistencies in text alignment, time-consuming Javascript page transitions, and other amusing but useless effects. Although this may seem extreme, it is not difficult to find an example of this website "style" on the Internet. The reason these sites exist is because it is a novice's nature to exploit every single resource available, and apply it to their work. Understanding how to effectively utilize these elements is the key to good website design. The number of tags in a website's code is not necessarily a measure of its calibre. There are several qualities that are common in a well designed website, those being consistency in appearance, relatively fast loading time, ease of use, and readability of the website.
