The Inspector's final speech.
In this essay I will examine Inspector Goole's final speech in Act 3. This is the section that begins with the Inspector's "Stop" as he tries to calm the Birling family down before stating his final conclusion about Eva's death.
Throughout 'An Inspector Calls' Goole always states the way that people are responsible for their own actions and the way that those actions have an affect on others. These views are summed up in his dramatic final speech, that "We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other". Therefore, when he calls out "Stop!" we can see that it is not unusual considering the way he feels about behaviour and moral responsibility. After all, it comes just at a time in the play when the Birling's are at their worst; Mr Birling is strangling his son Eric and holding onto his throat for what appears to be a very long time.
In the National Theatre production of the play, the actor who plays Inspector Goole delivers the word "Stop" in a very loud yet smooth voice...
