Vietnam is a strip of land whose configuration points out the letter S. Situated at the center of Southeast Asia, it is bordered in the North by China, the west by Laos and Kampuchea, and opens in the East and the South on the Oriental Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The coast is stretched on 3 260 terrestrial km and borders on 3 700 km. By flight of bird, the North-South distance is 1 650 km; the maximum width of the territory in the North reaches 600 km, in the South 400 km and the minimal width is of 50 km in the area of Quang Binh. Vietnam is a crossroads for displacements between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
2. The Origin of the war
In July 1954, following the Geneva agreements, after one hundred years of colonial rule, a defeated France was forced to leave Vietnam. The French could no longer maintain their Indo Chinese colonies and Paris quickly wanted peace. So Vietnam gained its independence from France in 1954.
