In 1588 Queen Elizabeth I of England delivered an effective and morale-boosting speech to her troops in Tilbury. Her purpose was to motivate her troops to repel the Spaniards and save England. Elizabeth knew that motivated soldiers were imperative during war. She successfully raised her troops' spirits in her speech by carefully choosing diction, imagery, and sentence structure. In the paragraphs that follow I intend to show how the Queen used the resources of language to achieve her goal.
Queen Elizabeth worded her speech to make it more effective and meaningful in the minds of her soldiers. In the first line, "loving people" was used to stress that the people of England were actually citizens who were fighting for their homeland and their love for England. The queen went on to say, "my realm" to convince her troops of her own love for England. She wanted her soldiers to know that she cared immensely about the outcome of the battle and the fate of England. It was important for Elizabeth to let her soldiers know that they were fighting in their own best interest and for their own safety...
