Urban Sprawl
Abstract:
What is Urban Sprawl? The definition is:
Urban sprawl
n. The unplanned, uncontrolled spreading of urban development into areas adjoining the edge of a city.
Urban Sprawl is an epidemic that is sweeping cities nationwide. As we speak, Karla’s hometown, Elk Grove, Ca is falling victim of Urban Sprawl. Urban Sprawl has a history that began with World War II, with the start of freeways. In the beginning, urban sprawl seemed completely harmless and even seemed necessary, in regards to goods and money. “The high density of Urban populations has provided governments with significant cost advantages in delivering goods and services” (Miller 264).
As we see over time, Urban Sprawl has been much more detrimental than helpful. Some effects that Urban Sprawl causes are earth endangering. Some of these include:
• Diminishing farmland
• Wildlife destruction and fragmentation
• Human health problems
• Contaminated water
• Noise/air/traffic pollution
These are only a few of the effects of Urban Sprawl; there is much more that is harmful to the environment. There are solutions to stop Urban sprawl. Government based projects such as zoning, NAUTILUS, developmental caps; infrastructure limitations have all been solutions to prevent urban sprawl. The goal of this research project is to provide awareness of problems with urban sprawl and to offer some possible solutions to stop this rising problem.
The History of Urban Sprawl:
The start of urban sprawl began right after World War II. ... Urban sprawl expanded rapidly after 1945, causing an influx of small towns to spread into becoming large cities. ...
