Tawera Nikau
Losing a limb is hard, not only physically but mentally as well. ... Tawera Nikau, a former footballer, suffered a tragic motorbike accident on July 1st 2003. Tawera Nikau broke his leg and due to complications, had to have his right leg amputated. Nikau crashed into an oncoming car at Ohinewai in New Zealand.
On the 1st of July 2003, Tawera Nikau was riding his Harley Davison on a quite rural road when suddenly his motorcycle struck an oncoming car. ... Nikau was rushed to Waikato Hospital where he had at least four operations on the broken femur. ... The doctors then gave Nikau a choice. ... Nikau then told the doctors to “cut the bugger off”. This was a major call from Nikau and it meant that he would be back with his family and walking in 3 to 4 months.
This was not the first tragedy that Tawera Nikau had faced in his life. His wife, Letitia Nikau committed suicide in April 2001 after an ongoing feud with another family, leaving Tawera and his two children.
