Teenagers, Parents and Birth Control
Should teenagers be required to obtain parental consent in order to obtain birth control contraceptives? This question has caused a lot of controversy and debates in today's society. Birth control contraceptives have been available to women for many years. Contraceptives are primarily used for the prevention of pregnancy and STD's (sexually transmitted diseases). Contraceptive services provide screenings, counseling and education on sexual health issues and concerns that some teenagers may face. These services also include providing contraceptives, treatment of STD's and prenatal information. Currently, there are no state or federal laws in effect that require parental consent in order to obtain birth control contraceptives from a health care provider. Teenagers have a right to confidentiality and privacy if and when they "responsibly" decide the time is right for them to use birth control contraceptives. Teenagers should not be required to get parental consent in order to obtain birth control contraceptives.
