From my understanding, motherhood is supposed to be very joyous. It's supposed to be a priviledge. But on the other hand, mothers have a responsibility. They have a responsibility to care for their children no matter what the situation maybe. They also take on the responsibility to protect their families and make sure that their children obtain a better life then the ones they had. Even though being a mother is considered a joy, it is also a task that is hard to handle. This task is illustrated in The Joys of Motherhood.
Nnu Ego is the main character in the novel and from the opening scene, I could see that something had drove her to the point of no return. As she runs frantically though the streets, she had a sense of "wilderness in her eyes that betrayed a troubled spirit". What was her trouble?..
