Ernest Hemingway was an American author born at about the beginning of the twentieth century whose ideas for his books were often based on his own personal experiences. A Farewell to Arms was written by Hemingway to take place in Italy during World War I. In Hemingway’s novels, he often uses a main character that is referred to as the Hemingway Hero. This Hero usually drinks a lot, finds first love with another character in the novel, and substitutes that love for other lost values in the character’s life. The Hero in this novel is Catherine Barkley and her first love is Frederick Henry. Catherine is the character that seems the most self-absorbed to the reader. She is constantly thinking of herself and is too concerned about herself and Frederick to think of anyone else. Catherine did not even realize that she was getting worn down, when working in the hospital, because of how wrapped up she was in Frederick. She put her needs and desires before her own and believed that as long as she did and said what he wanted, he would love her and stay with her. She says things like “I’ll do what you want and say what you want and then I’ll be a great success, won’t I?” (Hemingway 105).
