Walls
As if in a form of separation between two beings we are forced to, or unawarely put up walls between us. Either to make the separation clearly or just to keep the feel of self, away from others the walls become apparent. Between two friends, collogues, relatives, even companions the walls stay persistent or wear down very slowly. Within time walls can be broken and there are certain people who are willingly able to let their walls be knocked down or have a door into them. Entry way into these persistent walls are rare, but not un common.
IN Willa Cather's short story; Paul's case, Paul has set up a wall making it so that he is separated from the rest of his community. Within his wall reality to him has become a fantasy and will not leave his wall. This protective barrier that he has built around him is unhealthy and since it is keeping him in, rather than not letting others in, it seems almost impossible to be broken down. Friendship's and social relationship are unimportant unless it fits the standards that he has set within him, resulting in him ending his life. Without having an open mind Paul keeps to himself and can't learn anything about the things that he does not feel passionate about...
