William Gibson's play, "The Miracle Worker", tells of the many struggles and triumphs in the life of Helen Keller. Having suffered a high fever as an infant, Helen was left both deaf and blind. When her parents seek the aid of Anne Sullivan to help Helen with her handicaps, little do they know how much their lives will be effected along with several members of their household.
Being the mother, Kate Keller, had the tendency to spoil Helen. She wanted to let Helen do anything, as if this would make up for her handicaps. However, as events unfold, she sees how this in itself has become one of Helen's handicaps. Also her doubts about Annie Sullivan start to go away as she sees changes in Helen. Furthermore, she herself, starts to learn to sign so she will be able to communicate with Helen. Last, but most important, was her letting go of Helen and let her grow and be dependent on Annie instead of her.
In spite of his doubts about Anne Sullivan, Captain Keller must admit her methods are working...
