Steroids and other performance enhancing drugs help athletes to become physically stronger, but they are unfair and should be banned from all sports. They give athletes an unfair advantage, are a threat to athlete's health, and erase the significance of a milestone record. President Bush took a strong stance on the issue of steroids in his recent State of the Union address. He claimed, "The use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids in baseball, football, and other sports is dangerous, and it sends the wrong messagethat there are shortcuts to accomplishment and that performance is more important than character" (Shea A15).
Steroids give athletes an unfair advantage in their level of performance. They give what athletes call "an edge" over the competition. For example, a baseball traveling a couple more feet over a fence or a career ending hit on a quarterback could be the result of steroids. It is not fair that some athletes become stronger and better by working hard in the weight room and on the practice field, while others gain strength by simply inserting a needle into their body. Taking steroids is an unethical shortcut to help improve athletic performance. It is a way to cheat in the world of sports and is not fair to the clean athletes who work hard to improve...
