The Leadership Analysis of
General Joshua L. Chamberlain
1828-1914
Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain was born on September 8, 1928 in Brewer, a small rural community in Maine. His parents, Joshua and Sarah Dupee (Brastow) Chamberlain, named him after the heroic commodore James Lawrence who was famous for the words "don't give up the Ship!" He was the oldest of five children and his family was known for good manners, morality, education, and being a good citizens within the community.
Lawrence was very interested in the outdoors and he was a very athletic young boy. He was interested in Sailing, horseback riding, swimming, and bird watching. During his youth he was very responsible. He focused on his schooling and was very good farmhand for his father. He and his father had a great relationship, they enjoyed working in the fields together on their farm and Lawrence learned from him that willpower followed by positive action could accomplish seemingly impossible tasks.
