The events that took place during the time the Whitlam Government was in office (1972-1975) were some of the most constitutionally challenging and controversial that Australian Politics had ever seen before, or since. After 23 years of Liberal Government, the people voted Labor and saw a massive change in policy, which was almost immediate.
On Tuesday November 11th, 1975, the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, dismissed Mr. Gough Whitlam as prime Minister and appointed Malcolm Fraser as a caretaker Prime Minister.For the first time, An unelected vice-regal representative had removed a government from office that commanded a majority in the house of representatives. A double Dissolution election was held on December 13th, 1975, where the Whitlam Government was defeated.
Gough Whitlam was elected to power in 1972 following a fiery election campaign. The election was like no other. Whitlam managed his campaign in a way that made the majority of Australians warm to his unique style of political salesmanship.
