I was startled when I heard someone yell out "Ms. Sherria, Ms. Sherria". To my surprise it was my mentee's mother with her best friend. She stopped her car and we had a ten-minute conversation about Miami (where I'm from) and the FCAT. She told me that Courtney talks about me all the time. On Monday I knew the first thing Courtney would say is that her mother saw me. After hearing about the Tavis Smiley television special in class on Monday, I thought about my mentee and the definition of at risk. My mentee is not really considered "at risk" to me. She may be at risk because of her skin color; but as far as anything else goes her mother has done an outstanding job...
