Symbols can be a person, place, thing or event that compose meaning in itself and that also show something more than itself. Symbols can be used in poetry to aid the understanding of the writer's conception. Langston Hughes uses symbolism in his poems to express his feelings and beliefs. In various poems he uses his symbolism to communicate the way he believes in reference to the Bible and how he utilizes them in his every day life. Just about of all of the symbols he uses are from the Bible, in his book titled, Carol of the Brown King. He further uses symbols to allude to reality in African American's lives. Their purpose being to relate actual situations from history as well as their impact on Hughes, America, and the reader. Hughes's symbols exemplify his religion, his interpretations, and his own experiences. Hughes also conveys historical convictions to his commitment to African Americans.
