The Head Start program is a program that helps children from birth to age 5 as well as their families. It is a preschool children for low-income families who might not be able to send their children to preschool. It helps the children gain skills that they need in the classroom, as well as in their future lives in general. It was a program designed to help increase the readiness of children to attend school. The program is administered by the Head Start Bureau; the Administration on Children, Youth, and Families; Administration for Children and Families, and the Department of Health and Human Services. It was launched in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his War on Poverty. It began as a summer program for poor preschool children, however it has come a long way over the past forty years.
The original plan for Head Start was to focus more on medical issues rather than educational ones.
