Ken Torres Race , Ethnicity, And Gender Urban Sociology Dr. Julia Nevarez This eleventh chapter in the text book cities and urban life discusses the birth and rise of urban diversity in America. The text begins by initially examining the rise of diverse immigration into large cities, and the ever increasing presence of minorities. The chapter examines the idea of immigrants as being a benefit or a potential problem for urban cities. The idea of ethnic and racial variation of the US population display highly visible racial and ethnic diversity that is actually increasing. As the book uses the past to illustrate the European immigration that occurred earlier in the United States in previous generations, we learn that the very size of cities can nurture ethnic minorities. The first couple of pages illustrates the pattern of ethnic and racial immigration that is constantly shifting. We are introduced now to the idea of chain migration.
