Statistics show that people who learn how to fly ultralights while or before they were in high school did better in school and were accepted to better colleges. After reading this statistic I decided to learn how to fly ultralights not only for the fun of it but for the hope that colleges will look fondly upon this credential as they have for others.
To begin on this endeavor I will have to find an ultralight instructor, this step is made very easy for me because both my uncle and my father fit this requirement. I have flown in an airliner, a small plane and an ultralight, but never before have I manned the controls, or soloed. I look forward to learning something new and can only imagine what a wonderful experience it will be to fly, above the clouds, alone.
I wanted to do some research about ultralights before I began my instruction and so here is some of the general information that I found. An ultralight is officially called a recreational vehicle, but to give you an idea of what it really is, it could be described as a small aircraft or a flying recreational vehicle. It is defined by Federal Air Regulations as a single seat aircraft having a maximum empty weight of 254 pounds, maximum cruise speed of 55 knots, and maximum fuel capacity of 5 gal.
