"America and I", originally appearing in 1.923 in Children of Loneliness, is one of three autobiographical articles in the book. In this, Yezierska addresses the most important theme in her works in a more direct manner: The problems of the immigrants when they arrive to America. Not only must she learn to communicate with Americans, she must convince them that she has something worthy to say. This is stated when she says in this story: "I want America to want me". This story is narrated in first-person and she uses a Yiddish-English dialect. Her stories relate to episodes in her life but they are not strictly autobiographical. "America and I" can be discussed in terms of contemporary problems encountered by new immigrants, ghetto youth, working-class employees, and women. Here she tells when she came to the United States with hopes of building a new life, the kind of life that she and her ancestors were unable to achieve in Russia. Her work fuses aspects of realism (attention to details) and romanticism (characters idealism)...
