I have known Mr. X for a period of over 6 years now. He has not changed a bit. He still talks incessantly when he is drunk, and refuses to make an effort to listen to the person he is talking to. On those rare occasions when I do not find him completely inebriated, I see him staring at the wall and mumbling certain words to himself. One might say that he speaks because he wants to be spoken to (which was the initial diagnosis of his ailment), but in reality, he only speaks because he wishes to. Mr. X is my father’s old high school friend. He had served the Indian Army in the Indo-Pak war of 1971 where Indian soldiers overran erstwhile East Pakistan, and initiated the birth of a new nation – Bangladesh. Ever since he came back, he is said to have been acting strangely. When my father met him 6 years ago at a golf club, he immediately recognized my father and invited him to his house for a drink. My father soon realized that his friend was excessively dependant on alcohol. Mr. X’s wife explained the entire situation to my father. Mr. X consumed way too much alcohol, and drank from morning till night. He would never talk normally, or about normal things.
