All kids try to grow up to fast. Just as Dave who feels that he needs to own a gun because he thinks he is almost a man. He feels as if nobody will tease him if they see him with a gun but instead they would think of him as a grown man. Dave feels insecure because the people in the town look down on him due to his age. He thinks that having a gun will end all of his problems, but all it does is cause more. This character analysis shows how immature, selfish, and insecure Dave really is.
Dave stops by Mister Joe's store to look at a catalog of guns, but he ends up taking it home. As Dave was leaving the store Mr. Joe told Dave that he would sell him a gun for two dollars. Dave thinks this is good news because that was cheap for a gun...
