Analysis of Spanish Tragedy Addition
This addition adds to the play as a whole, as it provides many images which show the greatness of Hieronomo's son. The addition uses repetition to reinforce ideas and images in the minds of the audience, providing grounds for them to identify with Hieronomo's loss. The audience does identify with the loss and also experience the frustration that the gods will take their time in avenging his son's death. However, it is also a scene where there is confirmation for the audience that what they desire is on the way, by the hands of Hieronomo.
The many references to his 'son/my son' causes us to allude to the Bible where throughout the gospels the son is mentioned many times "this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" God loved Jesus before he had done anything to earn it, and this illustrates further the unconditional love the father has for him. Hieronomo in much the same way loves his own son, believing that his son was a good and just man. Feeling intense grief that we clearly see in previous passages in The Spanish Tragedy, Hieronomo questions why he loves his son. He asks why we don't love animals as we love other humans -"Why might not a man love a calf as well?"(3.11...
