Modernism is a self conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of expression. The Matrix itself as a movie is a break from the past and its film style was a new form of expression with the way it presented itself to the audience. One of the major themes in The Matrix is the definition of "truth" and how it relates to perception. The modernist opinion on "truth" is creatively explained in The Matrix. Another major theme is the concept of "freedom" and how it may differ between society and the individual. Even though this has been explored many different ways and in several types of media, The Matrix puts an unexplored modern twist to it. The movie also took special effects to new heights and gave filmmakers a new way to articulate their ideas. These themes were expressed in true modernistic style and explored a future that was never seen before. The film The Matrix is a great example of modernist thought with the technology used to make the movie and the themes within the movie.
Truth is all up to interpretation...
