Diabetes Mellitus is a disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a
hormone that helps the body=s tissue absorb glucose. Glucose needs to be absorbed so it can be used
as a source for energy. The condition may also develop if muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond
well to insulin. In people with diabetes, glucose levels build up in the blood and urine, causing
excessive urination, thirst, hunger, and problems metabolizing fat and proteins.
In the United States, about 17 million people suffer from diabetes mellitus. Every year about
1 million people are diagnosed with the disease. Diabetes is most common in adults over 45, in
people who are overweight or inactive, or in people who=s family has a history of the disease.
The highest rate of diabetes in the world occurs in Native Americans. More women have been
diagnosed than men.
