Throughout history, literature has lent itself as an illustrator of radical changes and perhaps more subtle changes that define American culture. Many radical and different changes in literature occur during this time in America. For purposes of this essay, a select few pieces of work from this time period will be examined and grouped into a few concepts. The concepts of regionalism, naturalism and realism will be used. Although these three concepts will be targeted, the literature of this time period is not to be limited to these three.
Regionalistic literature can best be defined as literature pertaining to a certain geographic area. "Authors in this tradition make use of a region's folklore and history and show how they affect the lives of the inhabitants" (text 253). Dialect also aides writers in developing the regionalistic aspects of their works. The concept of regionalism is highly evident in literature of the late 19th century.
