In the play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller suggests Willy’s inability to deal with an industrialized, urbanized world as shown through his ideals about success, his troubles with family life, and his signs of mental instability. ... Willy expresses his desire to be a salesman, but throughout the play his longing to be like Dave Singleman seems to be slowly slipping away. Willy explains that the population is increasing, therefore the “competition is maddening” (Page 17) which makes it difficult for him to thrive as a salesman. ... It bothers Willy that his is slowly faltering and shows that his only happiness in the world is to be a successful salesman that will be accepted and valued by everyone he meets.
