Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896)
Clara Schumann is quoted in saying; "A woman must not wish to compose-there never was one able to do it."1 The Romantic piano composer and performer, Clara Schumann is one of the most inspirational musicians for women. She composed difficult works that were written by her to be performed by her, a skilled virtuosa at the piano. She also composed other pieces that dances, caprices, romances scherzos, one piano concerto with orchestra, one piano trio, three romances for violin and piano, and Lieder with texts by Burns, Ruckert, Heine, and many others. Along with Clara Schumann's musical accomplishments she also was a wonder wife and artistic partner to Robert Schumann, and mother of eight. The following will give biographical information on Clara Schumann's life focusing on her musical career and personal life.
Clara Schumann, was born Clara Josephine Wieck in Leipzig; September 13, 1819. Her parents were piano teacher Friedrich Wieck (1785-1873) wife Marianne Tromlitz (1797-1872) who was also a student to her husband. Before Clara was born, her father determined that she would be a child prodigy at the piano.7 Therefore, he started her immediately with music lesson at the age of five making her childhood life consist of piano, violin, singing, music theory, harmony, composition, and counterpoint...
