Intro
Massage is defined as the systematic manual or mechanical manipulations of the soft tissues of the body by such movements as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping and tapping, for therapeutic purposes such as promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relief from pain, restoration of metabolic balance and other benefits both physical and mental. {Beck, 1988}
Massage is a natural and instinctive method by which minor aches and pains can be soothed away while bringing relief from nervous tension and fatigue.
Massage when properly applied by qualified practitioners, is of positive value in building and maintaining a healthy, vigorous body for men and women.
HISTORY
Massage is one of the earliest remedial practices of humankind and is said to be the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. ... Graham of Boston, Massachusetts published the first book in English on massage. {Beck, 1988}
PRINCIPLES & PHILOSOPHY
Massage therapists must also have a fundamental understanding of the clients needs, this incorporates physiologic, mechanical, or psychologic effects attributed to this type of treatment. Relaxation, relief from pain, reduction of certain types of oedema, and increased range of motion can be accomplished through the use of massage (http://www. ... htm)
Massage is useful in the healing process but is also provides another therapeutic component that is quite absent from most other modalities, the component being ‘touch.’
In1986, the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami published groundbreaking research on the effects of massage on premature babies. The pre-term babies who received massage therapy showed 47% greater weight gain and six-day shorter hospital stays than the infants who were not receiving massage.
