Human history has not been peaceful. It is a history of conquest and subjugation. A stronger guy offended a weaker guy, a stronger tribe conquered a weaker tribe, a stronger country took over a weaker country ... Very often the conqueror wasn't satisfied with physical submission. Throughout history the conqueror confiscated wealth, women, raised high taxes. Other conquerors imposed their religion on the conquered. Others went even further and ripped out the culture of the miserable, imposed their own and rewrote the history. Such approach, thought the conqueror, will insure his or her rule.
