In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries New Zealand would change the censorship laws 5-10 years after the British and Australians. A possible reason for this is New Zealand’s late development, however, it could relate to the view of Maori. The importation of indecent material was banned in Britain in 1853, followed by New Zealand in 1858. ... Ten years later, New Zealand’s provincial councils introduced a similar law based on the Vagrant act in an attempt to cut down on the circulation of indecent material.
