Philosophy Reflections on Science
Ken Samples, an author and speaker from "Reasons to Believe," spoke on philosophical looks at science. He brought many interesting viewpoints as he related science to Scripture.
The three main points covered were: 1) The Christian Theistic world view, 2) Naturalism, and 3) the Big Bang as a way of tying scientific observations with the Scripture. In covering the first, Samples identified the many ways that the Christian faith supports science and vise versa. He pointed out that the orderliness and predictability line up with God's character as we experience it today and as the Bible proclaims God to be. He also presented the argument that the world with its fascinating characteristics is not meant to be worshiped, since it is not divine, but to be study. We as Christians do not have to be afraid of the earth and its realms of science, especially since the Lord gave us the ability to think, research, and discover. I had never thought of God's complexity and awe causing someone to be so boggled by creation, the world, and how it works that they turn to worshiping it, rather than simply striving to seek God to more fully explain what fascinates them. For me there was never a fear, but rather a deep desire to see God's creation in a more intimate fashion and study.
