This movie is based on the true story of Solomon "Platt" Northrup's harrowing journey from freedom into slavery and his fight to regain his liberty. Platt was a free black man living in the North who, along with his wife and three children, was leading a contended and happy life. He is a decent, well-mannered man who enjoyed playing the violin.
There came a time in his life when he and his family were in need of money. This situation necessitated his wife taking a job working outside of the home and it is at this point that the plot takes a horrible turn. One day, while his wife is out at work, two white men approach him suggesting some work he could do for money. Having lured him with the possibility of work and money for his family, Platt willingly leaves, but is actually kidnapped by these men who want only to sell him as a slave. He is sold to Jim Brich, who in turn sells him to another man, William Ford. Platt has now found himself a slave in the pre-Civil War South.
As Platt is being thrown into this life of slavery having been torn away from his family and freedom, he meets a young black girl named Jenny while he and other slaves are being transported by boat...
