"Outside, even through the shut window pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no colour in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere."
The novel 1984 written by George Orwell, is set in the year 1984 in 'Airstrip one' in Oceania, now known as London, controlled by a 'party' and led by its symbolic head Big brother. The Oceanian society is divided into an inner party, an outer party and a mass of 'proles'. The Protagonist Winston Smith is a member of the outer party, who is working at the ministry of truth. Winston is an everyman figure with flaws and weaknesses, who is uncomfortable with the control that he experiences. In an act of dangerous rebellion he starts to keep a diary of his illegal thoughts although he finds himself confused with time and struggles to write. His work involves him altering historical records to fit the Party's system. Through Winston's job Orwell has communicated to the readers the power the media has in controlling the past, present and future.
The theme in the novel is the danger of totalitarianism but the story is also a study of psychological control and thought manipulation...
